Delay in announcing Kerala Chief Minister: IUML calls emergency meeting

Amid the growing dissatisfaction within the party over the Congress leadership’s delay in naming the next Chief Minister of Kerala, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has called an emergency leadership meeting at Panakkad in Malappuram on Wednesday. The IUML is likely to address the political paralysis following the UDF’s election victory.

All senior leaders of the party, including the national general secretary and state president, will attend the meeting. The meeting aims to address the party’s growing dissatisfaction with the Congress leadership’s delay in naming the next Chief Minister of Kerala.

It is learnt that the IUML plans to draft and send a formal expression of displeasure to the Congress High Command regarding the nine-day delay in government formation.

The IUML’s own claims for cabinet portfolios and ministerial berths, which are currently on hold due to the leadership vacuum, will be discussed in the meeting. The meeting will also evaluate the impact of the delay on naming the Chief Minister on party workers and voters.

The IUML noted that newly elected representatives are facing public scrutiny, with voters questioning the leadership vacuum. In some areas, victory celebrations have been stalled due to the uncertainty.

IUML Malappuram district general secretary P. Abdul Hameed stated that the delay is causing widespread frustration, with people questioning the leadership “even at weddings and funerals”.

Despite the United Democratic Front (UDF) winning a decisive 102 seats in the 140-member assembly on 4 May 2026, the Congress high command is yet to finalise the next Kerala Chief Minister among the three contestants — V.D. Satheesan, K.C. Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala.
